Board of Education
Board
The Wilkes County Board of Education is the governing body for the school system. Board members are elected for four-year terms. Four district members are chosen from geographic districts that coincide with the districts for Wilkes County Commission members. The fifth Board member is elected "Chairman" from the entire county. The Wilkes County Board of Education shall elect by majority vote at the regular January board meeting a vice-chairperson, who shall preside in the chairperson's absence. The chairperson shall preside over all meetings of the Board, sign official documents of the Board and perform other duties as required by state and local law.
Board Meetings
Regular monthly meetings and briefings are scheduled on the third Monday of each month at 2:00 p.m. at the Board of Education Building located at 313-A North Alexander Avenue.
Public Attendance
The public is encouraged to attend Board meetings. Sessions are open to the public, with the exceptions specifically allowed by law (personnel matters, real estate matters and legal matters). Citizens who wish to address the Board should submit the Public Comment Agreement Form to the Superintendent at least one business day before the date of the meeting. A spokesperson must be named if a delegation wishes to address the Board. Citizens are limited to two minutes.
The board's minutes are open for public inspection after the Board's approval makes them official and will be posted on the website.
